Vaping Has Been Declared a Public Health Emergency

Vaping has claimed its first official victim, a teenager from Illinois

Thursday, September 5, 2019 - The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is investigating what is purported to be the first death directly attributed to vaping. TechCrunch.com reports that "Vape Lung" has claimed its first victim, a teenager from Illinois. About 25 young adults have been hospitalized in the midwest in recent weeks suffering from unidentified respiratory illnesses, some serious enough for the patient to be admitted to a hospital's intensive care unit. Symptoms of vaping-related illnesses include severe coughing, difficulty in breathing, irregular heartbeats, and vomiting. Newsweek reports that almost 200 people in all have suffered from vape-relates lung injuries in the last two month nationwide. Experts are also investigating reports of teenagers adding dangerous chemicals to their vape liquid to produce a new wave of designer drugs. The most popular additive being added to vape pens is THC, the active chemical in marijuana. A vape user can ingest a much greater concentration of THC via a drag on a vape pen than one can by smoking a physical marijuana cigarette. Also of concern is the concentration of nicotine in a vape pod that can be the equivalent dosage of 20 ordinary cigarettes. E-Cigarettes are intended to replace the habit of smoking physical cigarettes, gradually reducing the amount of nicotine delivered and helping the person quit the habit. Unfortunately, E-cigarettes has caused a "pet rock-like" fad among teenagers that never smoked that are taking up the vaping habit thinking that it is safe. It is not. Vape pens are slick-looking and feeling devices resembling puffing on a portable USB computer drive and the high-tech nature combined with a variety of delicious fruit flavors attract teenagers. Juul Vape is being investigated for deliberately targeting teenagers with advertising to try vaping without explaining the risks of addiction that even small doses of nicotine can cause. It is estimated that over three and one half million high-school-age young adults have taken up the vaping habit having never before smoked cigarettes.

In 2018 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that of the potential for vaping to cause teenage nicotine addiction, seizures, and popcorn lung and called vaping "a major public health emergency." Popcorn lung is a condition that stems from the symptoms of inhaling dust from microwave popcorn, one that affects the elasticity of the alveoli in the lungs making breathing difficult.

Vape pens are considered by the FDA to be "noncombustible tobacco products." The FDA reports that teenage vape use nearly doubled in 2018 over 2017. "Among middle and high school students, 3.62 million were current users of e-cigarettes in 2018." the FDA reported. Vape pens and products must now carry the same nicotine warnings as all other tobacco-related products. The city of San Francisco recently became the first US city to officially ban vaping. Cnn reported today that Milwaukee has joined the list of cities banning Vape pens.
