Governor Cuomo To Ban Vaping In New York State

The anti-vaping dominoes are starting to fall as hundreds of mysterious yet serious lung injuries are being reported all over the country

Tuesday, September 10, 2019 - There is a good chance that the vaping craze that has engulfed teenagers across the United States will come to an end as fast as it began. Hundreds of mysterious cases of "vaping illnesses" and at least five deaths can be linked to teenagers use and abuse of vape pens. Vape pens were designed to replace cigarette smoking to help adults wean themselves off of cigarettes and to moderate their nicotine addiction. What has happened instead is that the vaping craze has inticed thousands of teenagers as young as middle school age to take up the habit of vaping and to become addicted to nicotine in the process. A single "vape pod" can contain the same nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. The City of San Francisco was the first US city to ban the use of vape pens within its jurisdiction and now New York Governor Andrew Cuomo intends to do the same in his state. According to Lohud.com "Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters Sept. 9, 2019, that New York will investigate vaping companies and urged New Yorkers to stay clear of the products because it is not clear whether they are safe amid lung illnesses reported in New York and across the nation." Cuomo has acknowledged that vaping has attracted the state's young people to start vaping and the governor admitted that "we don't know exactly what they are smoking and what the consequences are." Cuomo's comments are echoed by New York's Health Commissioner Howard Zucker who told Lohud that there have been 41 cases of mysterious severe lung illnesses reported this year in New York State. According to Lohud the US Center for Disease Control has reported around 450 cases of vape lung disease and 5 deaths nationwide linked to vaping. Those numbers are expected to grow. One of the more-heavily reported vape pen-related lung illnesses is popcorn lung, an illness that takes its name from the dust generated while cooking microwave popcorn that can harm the delicate alveoli sacs in the lungs.

There are several reasons why vaping has attracted the attention of teenagers from middle school to high school, and across college campuses as well. Psychologists point out that the current millennial generation is attracted to the vape pen for its high-tech look and feel and also to the variety of flavors vape pods come in such as green apple, cherry, cinnamon, vanilla, buttered popcorn, strawberry banana, mint and a variety of combinations according to Bustle.com. Teenagers are also experimenting with using the vape pen to seamlessly deliver other drugs such as THC with the vape pen. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana and can be easily synthesized and smoked through a vape. Juul Labs Inc. is the nation's leading Vape pen manufacturer. Bloomberg recently reported that the company has been charged along with their majority shareholder Phillip Morris Inc. with targeting children with their advertising and deceiving people about the health risks of vaping. A lawsuit brought by a teenager claims "Juul and Philip Morris violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, adopting the tobacco industry's past use of catchy ad campaigns aimed at children."
