Add Massachusetts To The List of States That Have Banned Vaping

Experts think that banning vaping may have the opposite effect and make the dangerous habit more attractive to the younger generation

Wednesday, September 25, 2019 - The State of Massachusetts is taking a thorough but cautious approach and banning the use of all vape products for four months during which time the topic of vape-related illnesses will be studied in depth. Over 1000 young adults and minors have been taken to hospital emergency rooms across the nation complaining of lung pain and having trouble breathing from being a frequent user of flavored vape pens. Vape pens are intended to replace nicotine patches and gum as a preferred aid to quitting smoking. The problem, however, is that flavored e-cigarettes have become so cool and fashionable among youngsters that health officials fear that the product has attracted non-smokers to take up the vaping habit, and thus creating a new generation hooked on nicotine. A single vape cartridge delivers the same amount of nicotine as 20 conventional cigarettes. The governor of Massachusetts is taking no chances and heading off potential fatalities like the seven that have occurred from vaping in other states. "Today I'm officially declaring a public health emergency in the commonwealth, due to severe lung disease associated with the use of e-cigarettes and marijuana-infused vaping products," the governor told WBUR.org. The governor is particularly concerned about the ease and secrecy in which vape pens can be converted to deliver illegal drugs such as marijuana THC. Massachusetts' ban on vaping follow bans in New York and Michigan and a complete ban by the city of San Francisco, California. Juul Vape pen attorneys have vast experience representing families in the United States and offer a free consultation and no obligation to file a claim.

Opponents of banning e-cigarettes and flavors are critical because they fear it will fuel demand for black market vaping products that many fear will be even deadlier than what is on the market. Experts think that the governments are playing politics by declaring an all-out public health emergency and panicking where thoughtful and prudent "legal regulation" is called for. Shaleen Title, the commissioner of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission tweeted that the ban was a "terrible decision, that the government ban was overreaching, and that the ban was dangerous, short-sighted, and undermining of legal regulations," according to WBUR. Lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are considering a nation-wide ban on all e-cigarettes and related products until more can be learned to prevent the illnesses they are causing.

It is hard to argue against either side in the ban e-cigarettes argument. On the one hand, no one wants to see more children become addicted to vaping and the potential health hazards flavored vaping poses, but on the other hand, banning vape pens most likely will do nothing to prevent those that want to vape from getting the device on the underground market like they can do with any illegal drug. Making vaping illegal may even have the opposite effect and make vaping more attractive to a younger generation that thrives on thumbing their nose at their parents, adults and authorities.
