Vape Pen Usage and Nicotine Addiction Is Exploding Among Young Adults

More and more non-smokers are taking up the Vaping habit

Thursday, August 8, 2019 - Every generation since the 1950s seem to come up with a set of difficulties that are uniquely their own and the current generation of millennials are no exception. As the first generation to be born in the age of the internet young adults are dealing with the deadly distractions that smartphones present to drivers who text while driving and deadly recreational drugs like Fentanyl that can kill in minutes. The latest and in my estimation, the greatest enemy to confront millennial's is Vaping, a seemingly beneficial, harmless way to replace dangerous cigarettes smoke with chemicals like pure nicotine that causes addiction. In theory, once a user has replaced the cigarette habit with the Vape habit, the quantities of nicotine inhaled can be monitored using a smartphone app and gradually reduced over a period of time. The problem, however, is that Vaping is not as safe as its manufacturers and marketers first led people to believe and second, there may be many new Vape users for everyone that merely switches. As a result, Nicotine intake has exploded to record levels. Juul Vape pen lawsuit attorneys representing families and persons harmed from JUUL Vape pens and offer a free consultation.

CNN.com reported the other day that "14 young people in two states were hospitalized the other day after vaping." 11 people in Wisconsin and 3 young adults in Illinois were hospitalized with vape related breathing problems. Wisconsin reported that there were 8 cases of lung diseases related to vaping in July. The teens all reported being severe breathing difficulty and were virtually unable to breathe. They were admitted to the local hospital's intensive care unit and placed on ventilators. Health officials were investigating the type of liquid the teens were vaping and whether or not additional drugs were added to their vaping pens.

Health officials that examined the teens report that Vaping was the source of the breathing difficulties in all of them and ruled out lung infections as the cause of their respiratory distress. Officials also worried about the long-term lung damages vaping may have caused. According to CNN, "Chuck Warzecha, a deputy administrator at Wisconsin's health department, said that "all of them were hospitalized with shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain. Some even needed assistance to breathe." While the patients are "generally improving," it is unclear what long-term effects they might face, he said."

Vaping's potential to cause lung damage immediately caught the attention of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that in 2018 warned Vape pen users of the potential for it to cause child nicotine addiction, seizures, and popcorn lung. The FDA calls child JUUL addiction "a major public health emergency." The FDA considers Vape pens "noncombustible tobacco products." The FDA reports that teenage vape use nearly doubled in 2018 over 2017. "Among middle and high school students, 3.62 million were current users of e-cigarettes in 2018." the FDA reported. Vape pens and products must now carry the same nicotine warnings as all other tobacco-related products.
