Juul Labs Accused of Targeting Children

Experts fear that vaping will have the same negative health consequences as cigarette smoking, or worse, should teenagers and others continue to vape long-term

Thursday, August 22, 2019 - Juul Labs Inc. the nation's leading Vape pen manufacturer may be in deep legal trouble after being charged along with Phillip Morris Inc. with targeting children with their advertising and also deceiving people about the health risks of vaping, according to an article today on Bloomberg.com. A lawsuit brought on behalf of a 16-year-old male who became addicted to nicotine that caused a worsening in his pre-existing asthma claims that "Juul and Philip Morris violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, adopting the tobacco industry's past use of catchy ad campaigns aimed at children." Phillip Morris owns a one-third stake in Juul Labs and is a named co-defendant. Juul Vape pen lawsuit attorneys are offering free consultations and no obligation to file a claim.

Juul defends its position on their marketing as going to great lengths to discourage people who are not already nicotine-addicted from starting the vaping habit. According to Bloomberg, Juul claims it has "(improved) its online age-verification process, deleted social media posts glamorizing vaping, and stopped the sale of some fruit- and dessert-flavored products in retail stores." The lawsuit alleges that Juul's efforts are too little and too late as millions of teens are already nicotine-addicted from having been encouraged by the company's advertising to vape.

Juul is also being accused of concealing the fact that vaping is more addictive than smoking cigarettes. Experts on YouTube.com are finding that e-cigarette vapor contains dangerous chemicals not found in cigarettes and the vape pen delivers up to 50% more nicotine per puff. As a result, those who take up the vaping habit thinking that it is non-addictive soon become addicted and people who vape to replace their cigarette addiction and go back to cigarettes find they smoke much more.

The lawsuit against Juul alleges that the company has been influenced by Phillip Morris to adopt the same advertising strategies used in the 1950's targeted teenagers and that falsely claimed that cigarette smoking was not harmful and would help you to relax. Juul has copied PM's use of youthful and hip imagery through social media to deliver their subliminal message. Studies have also shown that cancer-causing chemicals like those found in traditional cigarettes are showing up in dangerous levels in the urine of vape users and that the long-term effects of vaping are unknown.

Health officials have become alarmed by the number of teenagers that have been required to seek emergency medical treatment after using a vape pen. Hospital officials fear that teenagers may be adding dangerous chemicals to get high from vaping. "14 young people in two states were hospitalized the other day after vaping" according to Cnn.com, 11 people in Wisconsin and 3 young adults in Illinois. This is in addition to 8 cases of lung diseases related to vaping in July 2019. The teens reported severe breathing difficulty, admitted to the intensive care unit and placed on ventilators.
