Doctors Report E-Cigarettes Cause Severe Lung Damage

Doctors report that teens seeking medical treatment after experiencing vaping lung pain have the lungs of an 80-year old smoker

Friday, January 17, 2020 - A 15-year old boy from Texas died the other day as a result of vaping and according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is the youngest victim of the e-cigarette craze. Time.com just published an article that emphasizes how shocked and dismayed doctors are at the condition of the lungs of their vape lung injury patients. According to Time, Dr. Philip Huang, a Dallas emergency physician told them "We are seeing that severe lung damage, and even death, can occur with just short term use of these products (e-cigarettes)." One of the health official's greatest concerns is the geometric rise of underage individuals that are taking up the vaping habit each year. "Federal data notes that among middle and high school students, e-cigarette use rose from 3.6 million in 2018 to 5.4 million in 2019," according to Time. Federal, State governments, as well as school districts, are all contemplating placing regulations on e-cigarettes in the wake of the epidemic of vape-related lung injuries and deaths that are occurring. 60 people including teenagers have died from vaping and around 2600 have been admitted to hospitals with lung injuries. The CDC reports that many more vape-related illnesses and deaths are under investigation. A School district in San Diego is suing Juul Inc., the nation's leading manufacturer of vape pens, flavor cartridges, and vape-related paraphernalia for undoing the decades of work done to educate students of the dangers of smoking. The Federal Government has increased the legal age for smoking and vaping to 21 but such a move is not expected to have any effect except to make vaping more forbidden, daring and enticing to teens. One of the reasons that vaping is so appealing to young, underage individuals is that companies like Juul Inc. have engaged in sophisticated marketing campaigns using internet social media where social media influencers, young adults with tens or hundreds of thousands of YouTube subscribers, used the Juul vape pen and recommended it repeatedly to their young audience. The influencers were paid a commission on those that "clicked-through" to the Juul and other affiliated websites and purchased vape products. An example of Juul's social marketing scheme was exposed by CNN recently in an article featuring Brooklyn-based Christina Zayas, a full-time social media creator, and blogger, who was solicited to recommend Juul vape products to her social media audience. According to CNN, "They liked my edgy style and that I appealed to the younger market," Zayas told reporters.

In addition to social media pier pressures, chemicals are added to vape cartridges that prevent the first drag or puff from causing the gagging, choking, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, and overall sickness that a first combustible cigarette produces. Also, these additives make it possible for vapers to "pull" or take a bigger inhalation of vapor without cigarette side effects, thus delivering a much greater nicotine dosage per inhalation. Teenagers that have never smoked or used drugs before and have started using a vape pen are becoming instantly addicted to using the device with a greater dependency than crack cocaine, methamphetamine, or heroin.
